Conte reiterates support for political solution in Libya

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

ROME – Italy at the forefront for a political solution capable of ensuring lasting peace and stability in Libya, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte tweeted on Saturday.

The Italian premier also affirmed his country’s “support for Security Council… urging all parties to commit to ceasefire, de-escalation and rapid return to mediation driven by UNSMIL’s Ghassan Salamé.”

Conte’s remarks after the United Nations Security Council released on a press statement calling for a commitment to a ceasefire and return to U.N.-led mediation.

“The United Nations Security Council called on all parties to the Libya conflict on Friday to commit to a ceasefire and return to U.N.-led mediation,” said Indonesian U.N. Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, president of the 15-member body for May.

Clashes erupted in Tripoli between the Libyan National Army (LNA) and militias of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) after LNA launched a military operation in the capital on April 4. LNA’s operation aims to eliminate militias and terrorist groups that dominated the capital since 2011.
