The Address | Benghazi – Libya
ROME – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met with the General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar on Thursday morning in Rome.
Conte described the meeting as “lengthy”, during which he was briefed on the developments in Tripoli, where he expressed Italy’s position on the situation that Libya is currently living.
“I have called for a ceasefire and we are confident that it is possible to move towards a political solution,” Conte told reporters on the sidelines of a public administration forum in Rome following the two-hour meeting.
The meeting between Conte and Haftar at the Prime Minister’s Office (Keiji Palace) was preceded by a meeting between Conte and the US ambassador to Italy, Louis Eisenberg.
It is noteworthy that US President Donald Trump had made a phone conversation with Marshal Haftar, which was seen as a confirmation of the role of Haftar, who led LNA to secure eastern and southern Libya in addition to large parts of the west.
The White House announced that Trump expressed appreciation for Mashal Haftar’s important role in combating terrorism and ensuring the security of Libya’s oil resources as they reviewed a common vision of Libya’s transition to a stable and democratic political system.
