Egyptian authorities began to investigate the terrorist Hesham Ashmawi, after he was received from Libya late on Tuesday.

During the transfer of Ashmawi to Cairo another detainee was seen. Sources confirmed that he is called Safwat Zeidan, a bodyguard for Ashmawi.

Ashmawi was handed over following a visit by the Egyptian intelligence chief, Major General Abbas Kamel, to the headquarters of the General Command of the Libyan National Army, where he met Field Marshal Khalifa Hafter, LNA’s General Commander.

Ashmawi, a former Egyptian army officer, was arrested in the Libyan city of Derna last October during the LNA battle against extremist “Shura Mujahideen of Derna” organization.

He was sentenced in absentia in Egypt to death for being convicted of involvement in several attacks including an attack in 2014 that killed 22 border guards near Libya borders.

The information office of the LNA General Command said that the extradition of Ashmawi came within the framework of counterterrorism operations in North Africa and within the framework of joint cooperation between Libya and Egypt.
