TRIPOLI -About 300 Syrian fighters were sent to Tripoli from Turkey and 1000 others were reportedly transferred to Turkish training camps waiting to leave for Libya, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
Citing a Libyan official, Bloomberg reported on Friday that “ethnic Turkmen rebel groups that have fought alongside Turkey in northern Syria are expected to reinforce the government in Tripoli imminently”.
Turkey is backing the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarrj, in its fight against the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, in Tripoli.
“The Libyan government had initially resisted the idea of such a deployment but eventually accepted it as Haftar’s forces began to advance on Tripoli,” the Libyan official told Bloomberg.
In addition to Syrian rebels, Turkey is planning to send its own troops to Tripoli which will be deployed in Libya in early January.
