Italy’s former Interior Minister: Thousands departing from Libya

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

ROME – “Tens of thousands of men” are ready to leave Libya “with the help of human traffickers”, former Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini warned in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

“We risk disaster,” he stated. “And how does the government react? With a circular to the prefectures inviting reimbursements to be increased for structures that welcome asylum seeker.”

Salvini served as Interior Minister between June 2018 and September 2019 and was known for his hard-line policies on migration.

Italy’s coalition government between Salvini’s right-wing League and 5-Star Movement broke down last year, when in a sudden move Salvini declared it dead and called for elections.

Subsequently, the 5-Star Movement and the center-left Democratic Party agreed to form a new coalition government with Giuseppe Conte remaining in his position as Prime Minister.
