Italy seizes ship suspected of trafficking weapons from Turkey to Libya

GENOA – A cargo ship flying the Lebanese flag was seized yesterday by the Italian authorities in the port of Genoa under the suspicion that it was carrying illegal weapons from Turkey to Libya, Italian newspaper Il Secolo reported.

The ship, which is named Bana, entered the port of Genoa for technical checks. But after a three-day layover, a  25 years old sailor showed up at the maritime police station, where he asked for protection and political asylum, in exchange for information on the ship’s cargo.

The information turned out to be a video, apparently shot right in the belly of the container ship, showing various  military weapons, including tanks.

The case is now being investigated by the Genoa District Anti-Mafia Directorate and Digos, according to Il Secolo.
