TRIPOLI – More than 200 migrants were rescued and returned to Libya today after sailing to the Mediterranean on different boats in the past few days, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Thursday.

In the past few days, six boats carrying more than 500 migrants departed from Libya. Most of them were returned by the Tripoli-based coast guard today, IOM said in a tweet.

IOM did not disclose what has become of other migrants. It reiterated its call to end returns to Libya.

“A safe disembarkation mechanism is needed,” IOM said.

Migrants fleeing violence and poverty continue to attempt the Mediterranean crossing through Libya in the hope of reaching Europe.
