Syrian mercenary killed in southern Tripoli

TRIPOLI – A Turkey-backed Syrian mercenary was killed earlier on Sunday in southern Tripoli, said the Military Information Division of the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Mohamed Hindawi, leader of the so-called Second Legion, was killed during a targeted operation by LNA, which took place on Ain Zara area in southern Tripoli.

Since April last year, LNA, led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, has been battling militias allied with GNA. These militias have been the main source of chaos and instability in the capital since the overthrow of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The conflict saw a grave escalation last December when Prime Minister of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj signed a military deal with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan which paved the way for Ankara to send some of its troops as well as Syrian mercenaries to Tripoli.
