ROME – Italian Foreign Minister Luigi de Maio officially invited Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), Aqila Saleh, to visit the Italian capital, Rome.
De Maio, in a Thursday’s hearing before Foreign Affairs committees of the Italian Senate and House of Representatives on recent developments in Libya, said: “I hope to receive Saleh in Italy as soon as possible and as circumstances permit. I have invited him,” referring to a phone conversation that took place between them on 7 May, according to Italian news agency, Nova.
De Maio added: “We have always recognized the government of Fayez al-Sarraj (GNA) and we have always had a dialogue with Cyrenaica and the Fezzan tribes, because we believe in the unity of Libya,” stressing that talking to everyone means protecting Italian national interests.
