The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that the Libyan Coast Guard has thwarted an attempt by nearly 400 migrants to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe on five boats over the past two days.

According to the organization, the number of people who tried to reach Europe this month has increased to more than 1,000 despite the closure of the Libyan international borders due to the outbreak of the Coruna virus.

The International Organization for Migration said that 317 migrants were returned to Libya on Sunday night, and more than 70 others were returned the day before.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that two people in the boats might have drowned.
