ROME – Italy stressed its commitment to cooperate with Libya and to enhance its presence in it. It also reaffirmed its commitment to push towards the warring parties’ return to the negotiations table and achieving a permanent ceasefire agreement.
Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Foglio, Italy’s Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio hinted that his country’ is seeking to to strengthen its military presence in Libya, saying that Italian army is already in Libya through Misurata Field Hospital. He added that their soldiers’ commitment to mine clearance in Libya is a step towards strengthening their presence is there.
The head of Italian diplomacy also said that the continued work of their embassy from inside Tripoli is clear evidence of Rome’s support for the Government of National Accord (GNA) “at a very difficult moment”. He added that the embassy presence in Libya was for the purpose of protecting “Italy’s geo-strategic assets.”
