EU: There are no migrant refoulement from Italy to Libya

BRUSSELS – The European Union has denied reports that migrants are being forcibly returned to Libya from Italy.

“The Libyan coast guard intervenes in its waters of competence, and the collaboration of the European Union with the Libyan coast guard has the aim of saving lives,” Italian news agency Ansa quoted a spokesman for the EU Commission as saying.

The EU Commission reiterated that the Union does not consider Libya as a “safe” country, and precisely for this reason it is working to find a political solution to the crisis in the country.

The European Commission said it continues its coordination with EU Member States the relocation of migrants rescued at sea.

“We are currently coordinating a series of operations,” the spokesman said, “but there is not a substantial number of countries participating.We strongly encourage all states to participate.”
