French frigate intercepts Turkish cargo ship off Libya coast

TRIPOLI – A French frigate taking part in the European Union’s Operation Irini intercepted a Turkish cargo ship en route to Libya on Wednesday.

Operation Irini announced that a French frigate, operating within its naval units, intercepted a cargo ship bound from Turkey to Misurata.

The EU Mission added that the French frigate forced the Turkish ship to submit to inspection, off the waters of Libya, indicating that it allowed it to leave again after confirming that there were no military cargo on board.

Launched in March 2020, the EU’s Operation  Irini aims to enforce the United Nations arms embargo on Libya, after repeated violation by foreign countries including Turkey.
