Erdogan asks parliament to extend troop deployment in Libya for 18 months

ANKARA – Turkey’s presidency on Saturday submitted a motion to parliament to extend troop deployment in Libya for 18 months.

Libya’s Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) and Turkey signed a number of security agreements last year. Those deals paved the way for Ankara to send its own troops as well as Syrian mercenaries to fight with GNA against the Libyan National Army (LNA), an eastern Libya-based forces that launched a military campaign to take over Tripoli in April 2019.

The Turkish presidency’s request comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts by the United Nations and the international community to reach a peaceful settlement to the Libyan conflict.
