Al-Sarraj, Conte discuss Libya’s peace negotiations in Rome

ROME – Fayez Al-Sarraj, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), met on Friday with his Italian counterpart, Giuseppe Conte, to discuss the latest developments in Libya.

During the meeting, which was also attended by Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, the two leaders focused their discussions on bilateral relations, “with specific regard to economic and security collaboration”, according to a statement by the Italian government.

Conte underlined ” highlighted the urgency – after too many years of instability and suffering for the Libyan people – to ensure that the UN-led political process is fully shared and operational, since it represents the only credible way to reach a comprehensive and sustainable solution, starting with an effective implementation of the cease-fire,” the Italian government said.

Italian premier also reaffirmed his country’s full support for intra-Libyan dialogue, “the commitment of which is essential to ensure an orderly and effective institutional transition towards the December 2021 elections.”

Conte described his meeting with Al-Sarraj as “constructive” in a tweet on Friday, adding that “the importance of swiftly advancing the political process under the auspices of the UN was reiterated”.

“Full support from Italy to the intra-Libyan dialogue towards a peaceful institutional transition in the interest of the Libyan people”.
